Sorren creates odd, dreamlike portraits and atmospheres through thick Impressionist-inspired brushstrokes, soft textures and a superb use of light. His surreal subjects are quietly expressive, conveying contrasting qualities of vulnerability and strength.
Joe Sorren was born in 1970 in Chicago, IL. He was raised in Arizona and earned a BFA from Northern Arizona University in 1993. Sorren’s award-winning illustration work has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, TIME and Rolling Stone. He has created numerous murals in the Southwest, which have appeared on film and television productions set in the area. The artist’s monograph Joe Sorren: Painting + Scultpure, 2004—2012 was published in conjunction with Interruption, his 2010 solo exhibition at the Grand Central Art Center at CSU Fullerton in Santa Ana, California.
